National Wood Floor Consultants developed this calculator to help guide you through some of the problem areas related to crowning conditions. Crowned floors can happen from two reasons, too much surface moisture/high Rh or sanding a floor while in a cupped position. Nonetheless there is a moisture imbalance causing the crowned floor. This calculator can be used two ways to determine the differential between the top and bottom moisture content.
Wood flooring being commercial harvested and manufactured today may include both cuts of wood, quarter sawn and plain sawn. Due to this scenario there is no real scientific conclusion of crowning other than approximations.
To use this calculator simply insert the all the required values. Pick category (Oak, Maple, Cherry), Specie (Red, Hard, Black), sawn (type), flooring width, installation moisture content, board thickness, top moisture content, bottom moisture content will give you the crowned value.
