National Wood Floor Consultants has developed this calculator to assist in guiding you through some of the problem areas related to room expansion.  This calculator is only a guide to provide approximations of expansion to the flooring or general contractor, homeowner, designer, etc.  Many times builders do NOT supply or specify a thick enough baseboard to allow for proper room expansion.  On the other hand, builders won’t include baseshoe as part of the millwork package.  This puts the flooring contractor at risk of failure due to lack of expansion.

This calculator can be used as an “Up Selling Tool” to achieve the best optimal conditions. 

Wood flooring being commercial harvested and manufactured today may include both cuts of wood, quarter sawn and plain sawn.  Due to this scenario, there is no real scientific conclusion of expansion or contraction other than approximations.

To use this calculator simply insert the all the required values.  Pick category (Oak, Maple, Cherry), Specie (Red, Hard, Black), sawn (type), flooring width, room width, current moisture content, project maximum moisture content (geographical chart).

This calculator will project maximum flooring expansion under specified conditions, however being shouldered next to each other may reduce this number by 50%.
